Federal Liberals Lead in Every Province/Region in the Country
Decided voters indicate that if a federal election were held tomorrow, the vote would be 49 percent Liberals, 20 percent PCs, 11 percent Canadian Alliance, 9 percent NDP and 9 percent Bloc (37% in Quebec).
These are the findings of an Ipsos-Reid/CTV NewsNet/globeandmail.com poll conducted between August 21 and August 23, 2001. The poll is based on a randomly selected sample of 1,000 adult Canadians. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within 177 3.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were statistically weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to the 1996 Census data.
Compared with the last Ipsos-Reid poll in July, the federal Liberals now stand at 49 percent, up from 48 percent in July. From west to east, the Liberals lead in BC with 53 percent (up 6%), in Alberta with 34 percent (up 1%), in Saskatchewan and Manitoba with 43 percent (down 2%), in Ontario with 53 percent (no change), in Quebec with 47 percent (up 4%), and in Atlantic Canada with 46 percent (down 9%).
Joe Clark's PCs hold steady at 20 percent of the national vote (down 1%) having fallen the most in support in Alberta (from 36% to 27%) but having picked up in Saskatchewan and Manitoba (from 25% to 29%) and in Atlantic Canada (from 27% to 37%).
As for the Canadian Alliance, they are up 1 percent over last month nationally to 11 percent. In the regions, they are down in BC (from 19% to 14%), down in Saskatchewan/Manitoba (from 16% to 11%), and down in Atlantic Canada (from 7% to 5%). The Alliance is up in Alberta (from 24% to 28%), up in Ontario (from 9% to 11%) and up in Quebec (from 2% to 4%).
As for the NDP, which is holding steady at 9 percent since July, their greatest gain is in Alberta (from 4% to 8%). In Quebec the Bloc have fallen from 41 percent to 37 percent.
