Most Canadians (58%): Liberals Not Yet Ready To Govern Canada

Toronto, ON - Despite a high profile leadership race over the past few months leading up to the Liberal convention this weekend, the majority of Canadians (58%) still do not consider the Liberal Party ready to govern Canada again (34% strongly feel this way) - essentially unchanged from the 60% who felt this way at the beginning of November - according to a new Ipsos Reid survey conducted on behalf of CanWest/Global News.

I'm now going to read you statements about federal political issues. For each one, I'd like you to tell me if you strongly agree, somewhat agree, somewhat disagree or strongly disagree: The Liberal Party is ready to govern Canada again?

  • Agreement is highest in Ontario (43%), British Columbia (42%), and Atlantic Canada (41%).
  • Disagreement is highest in Alberta (78%), followed distantly by Saskatchewan/Manitoba (63%).

These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted for CanWest News Service/Global News and fielded from November 28-29th, 2006. For this survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 1000 adult Canadians was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the aggregate results are considered accurate to within 177 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within each sub-grouping of the survey population.
