Step down chart

Seven in 10 (69%) Canadians think that Justin Trudeau should resign as leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Canada in the upcoming year, ahead of the scheduled federal election in 2025. This rises to 81% among those in Alberta (vs. 73% SK/MB, 70% ON, 66% BC, 63% QC, 62% ATL). Conversely, just 31% believe that Trudeau should stay on as Prime Minister and Liberal leader.

HEAD 2

Although most Canadians think Trudeau should step down, they are skeptical that he will. Just over one-quarter (28%) think it is likely Trudeau will step down as leader of the Liberal party in 2024, while 63% think this outcome is unlikely, with one-third of Canadians feeling it is very unlikely.  Canadians most skeptical that Trudeau will step down include those in Atlantic Canada (76%) and Alberta (71%) as well as older Canadians age 55+ (72%). Meanwhile, more of those 18-34 think Trudeau’s resignation is a likely outcome (38%). Regardless of whether Trudeau stays or goes, six in 10 Canadians (59%) think it's likely a federal election will be called in 2024. If an election is held in 2024 and Trudeau is still leading the Party, recent polling suggests that the Liberals would likely be handed a resounding defeat.
