Carney Approval Climbs After One Year, Outpacing Poilievre Support Momentum

Carney holds strongest approval as other federal leaders trail behind

CARNEY ONLY LEADER WITH MORE APPROVAL THAN DISAPPROVAL

Mark Carney remains the sole federal party leader with a net positive approval: 58% of Canadians approve (+10 pts vs. just before the 2025 federal election), while 33% disapprove (+3 pts). In contrast, his primary political opponent Pierre Poilievre faces greater disapproval at 48% (-4 pts), compared to 41% (+6 pts) who approve, even if more approve now than did last year (35%).

Consistent with Ipsos polling in 2025 for Global News, Mark Carney remains the sole federal party leader with a net positive approval: 58% of Canadians approve (+10 pts vs. just before the 2025 federal election), while 33% disapprove (+3 pts). In contrast, his primary political opponent Pierre Poilievre faces greater disapproval at 48% (-4 pts), compared to 41% (+6 pts) who approve, even if more approve now than did last year (35%).

Among Liberal voters, a staggering 93% approve of Carney's performance; among Conservative voters 85% approve of Poilievre's performance. Approval for Poilievre is higher in Saskatchewan and Manitoba (53%) and Alberta (49%), as well as among men (47%) and those aged 35-54 (47%). Carney’s approval ratings are highest in Atlantic Canada (64%) and among those aged 55+ (65%).

Compared to Jagmeet Singh’s approval ratings in March 2025, Don Davies falls behind the previous NDP leader by 15 points, likely driven by the fact that 59% of Canadians say they don’t know enough yet to have formed an opinion of him compared to 17% for Singh.

Davies, May, Blanchet, and Bernier see approval ratings around one-quarter or less among Canadians.

About the study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between February 25 and 26, 2026, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,001 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
