Many Ontarians (~15%) Mistakenly Believe they are Registered Organ Donors
Additionally, three in ten (29%) falsely believe you can register as a donor by signing and keeping a paper donor card and many that say they have an organ donor card have it stored somewhere not easily accessible such as a safety deposit box (6%), in their car (4%) or with someone else (4%), according to the 2017 survey.
Of those who believe they are registered donors, 7 in 10 (71%) have discussed their wishes to donate with their family, according to the 2017 survey.
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos polls conducted November 10 and 16, 2015 and between February 21 and February 24, 2017, on behalf of Trillium Gift of Life Network. For the 2017 survey, a sample of 802 Ontarians from Ipsos' online panel was interviewed online and for the 2015 survey, a sample of 1,000 Ontarians was interviewed. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the 2017 poll is accurate to within +/ - 3.9 percentage points, and the 2015 to within +/- 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Ontarian adults been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
