In Response to Downed Ukrainian Airliner, More Canadians Prefer Increased Sanctions Against Iran (76%) to Re-Establishing Diplomatic Ties (60%)

Most (89%) Want Canada to Press the Iranian Government to Pay Damages to Canadian Families Affected by Plane Crash

Toronto, ON, February 5th, 2020 — In response to recent events in Iran, which included the shooting down of a Ukrainian Airliner by the Iranian military and the death of 57 Canadians as a result, a new Ipsos poll shows that Canadians support a hardline position against Iran. Specifically:

  • Three quarters (76%) of Canadians support (28% strongly/48% somewhat) the Government of Canada increasing sanctions against the Iranian government, while one quarter (24% oppose (3% strongly/20% somewhat) such measures. Support is strong among voters of every party, including the Conservatives (88%), Liberals (77%), NDP (77%) and Bloc (70%).
  • Nine in ten (89%) Canadians support (58% strongly/32% somewhat) the Government of Canada pressing the Iranian government to pay damages to Canadian families affected by the plane crash, while just one in ten (11%) oppose (3% strongly/8% somewhat) this action. Support is consistent across party, demonstrating a broad consensus on this issue.

However, taking a more cooperative approach, six in ten (60%) Canadians support re-establishing formal diplomatic ties with Iran, such as re-opening a Canadian embassy. Four in ten oppose (12% strongly/28% somewhat) this course of action. Support, however, is divided along party lines: while a majority of Liberal (66%), NDP (69%), and Bloc (63%) voters support this course of action, only 47% of Conservative voters would like to re-establish formal ties with Iran.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between January 24th and 27th, 2020, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1000 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
