Ontarians Not Convinced that Ford is “Protecting Ontario”

Mixed perceptions of Ford’s performance, with relative strength on external issues but clear dissatisfaction on affordability, housing, and policy decisions.

FORD PERFORMS BETTER ON TRADE AND TRUMP, POORLY ON HOUSING AND AFFORDABILITYJust over half (53%) of Ontarians feel Premier Doug Ford is protecting them well when it comes to increasing inter-provincial trade, and a little less than half when it comes to Trump’s tariffs. Two in three (63%) think it’s good when Ford appears on U.S. TV to push back against Trump. However, on every other issue measured, from protecting the economy and jobs through to corruption, only a minority of Ontarians believe that Ford is doing well. Ford’s performance on making things more affordable, and on housing, is seen as particularly weak.

SIX IN TEN OPPOSE ONTARIO MPPS RECEIVING 4.2% PAY INCREASE ON APRIL 1Premier Ford has some headwinds on the policy front, particularly when it comes to a 4.2% pay raise for MPs. A majority (60%) oppose such a pay raise for Ontario’s legislators, while just 20% support it. Moreover, half (51%) of Ontarians oppose changes to OSAP funding, compared to only 32% who support it.

about the study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between March 10 and 11, 2026, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 801 residents of Ontario aged 18+ was interviewed online. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the population of Ontario according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 4.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Ontarians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
