Amid the fallout of Chrystia Freeland’s resignation, the Liberals and NDP remain tied at 20%, while the Conservatives (45%) open a 25-point lead among decided voters.  20% is the second-lowest share of the popular vote Ipsos has ever recorded for the Liberals, who are plumbing new lows not reached since 2011 when  Ignatieff led the Liberals (19%).
Just 14% (-8 pts since early Dec.) now believe that Trudeau is the best equipped to handle Donald Trump, while 39% (+ 5 pts) say Poilievre is best, a 25-point gap between the two leaders.
Similarly, most (73%) Canadians think Prime Minister Trudeau should resign as leader of the Liberal Party so that party members can elect a new leader, while only a quarter (27%) think he should stay on and lead the Liberals into the next election in 2025. Nearly half (43%) of remaining Liberal voters want Trudeau to resign as leader of the Liberal Party.

Over half (53%) of Canadians now believe the opposition parties should defeat the government at the earliest opportunity and trigger an election, a seven-point increase since early December. The proportion who believe the opposition parties should try to work with the government on a case-by-case basis to avoid an early election has dropped by seven points during the same period (47%). Only 23% continue to believe that the Trudeau government deserves re-election, and 77% think it is time for another party to take over in Ottawa, unchanged since early December.

About the study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between December 19 and 20, 2024, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,001 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
