Survey On Calgary Transit Work-To-Rule Campaign
Calgary, AB - Two weeks into a work-to-rule campaign launched by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 583, and with the spectre of a full strike now looming large, a new Ipsos Reid poll shows that seven-in-ten (69%) Calgarians say that they would support Calgary Transit becoming an essential service like Police, Fire, and EMS. In all, 40% "strongly support" this idea, and 29% "somewhat support" it. On the other hand, two-in-ten (21%) say they would oppose Calgary Transit becoming an essential service, with 7% "strongly opposing" and 14% "somewhat opposing" the idea.
Despite reports saying that wait times for buses on some routes have increased by almost an hour, only two-in-ten (17%) Calgarians say that they have personally felt the effects of Calgary Transit's work-to-rule campaign. A majority (83%) of Calgarians say they have not personally felt the effects of the work-to-rule campaign.
Residents of the Northeast sector of the city are more likely to feel the effects of the work-to-rule campaign (24%), compared to those of the Northwest (12%). The younger adult population in Calgary is more likely to claim to feel the effects of this campaign, in particular those between the ages of 18-34 (22%) and 35-54 (18%) compared to those 55 years of age and older (8%).
These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll fielded between April 3 and April 4, 2007 and is based on a randomly selected sample of 400 adult Calgarians. Results based on a sample size of 400 are considered accurate to within 177 4.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult population of Calgary been polled. These data were statistically weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual population of Calgary according to the 2001 Census data.
