The Swiss are divided on how to respond to US tariffs

A recent Ipsos survey in collaboration with 'Le Temps' reveals that Swiss public opinion is divided over the impact and response to US tariffs, showing generational nuances in economic confidence and consumption behaviour.

The survey, carried out between April 9th and 11th, gathered responses from a representative sample of 785 individuals across Switzerland, ensuring a 95% confidence interval in the findings.

With tariffs projected at 31% on certain goods, nearly 80% of the Swiss population believes that these tariffs will adversely affect their economy. Despite the negative outlook, more than half of the respondents (53%) trust in the Federal Council's ability to safeguard Switzerland's economic interests, although this confidence varies significantly across age groups. It is noteworthy that younger generations display less inclination to boycott American products. Interestingly, the announcement of the 90-day suspension of the proposed tariffs did not seem to affect the public’s perception of the economic impact. However, respondents who answered post-announcement expressed slightly increased confidence in the Federal Council, acknowledging its stabilizing role
