Canadians Show Increased Confidence in National Leadership’s Ability to Handle Trump; Notable Resistance to Us Products Continues
Confidence in leaders rises, but economic concerns and U.S. resistance persist.

Following months of Canada-US tension under President Trump, 77% of Canadians say they view America less favorably due to Trump's threats, a nine-point increase since February 2025. Meanwhile, confidence in Canadian political leaders' ability to manage Trump has risen to 59% (+12 pts) since before the election, marking a notable shift in public trust towards Mark Carney's government's handling of international relations. However, six in ten continue to feel their personal financial situation will suffer because of Trump (59%, +1 pt).

A significant proportion of Canadians continue to express their intention to avoid traveling to the United States (76%, +10 pts vs. February 2025) and to avoid American goods (72%, +5 pts). Heading into summer tourist season, the impact of altered travel patterns and their broader economic implications will be something to watch closely.
In line with February 2025, six in ten (59%, -1 pt) Canadians continue to favour the implementation of a subsidy program to protect workers from the adverse impacts of tariffs, though 24% (-4 pts) disagree and 16% (+4 pts) remain unsure about this option.
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between June 17 and 20, 2025, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,000 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
