When it comes to COVID-19 boosters, the “new normal” is here, with the same proportion of Canadians having received or intending to get a COVID-19 booster shot as a flu shot in the next three months.

Canadians aged 18-34 are more likely to have already received the COVID-19 booster vaccine (31%) compared to those aged 35-54 (18%) or 55+ (19%).

Four in ten Canadians (41%) are more concerned about COVID-19 than the flu, while a similar proportion are not concerned with either (44%).

Among those who have not received a COVID-19 booster vaccine, the main reason is that they do not feel it is worth getting one (45%).

TOP REASONS FOR NOT GETTING A BOOSTER

1. I don’t feel it’s worth getting a COVID-19 booster shot (45%)

2. I don’t feel safe getting a COVID-19 booster shot (23%)

3. I am against vaccines (7%)

52% have stopped following the news for information about COVID-19 & government recommendations, 48% agree they are following the news about COVID-19 closely, 44% agree COVID-19 is no longer a concern for them, 31% agree new COVID-19 variants are no longer dangerous for anyone.

Canadians are divided on following or not following information about COVID-19. Four in ten think COVID-19 is no longer a concern for them. Although this sentiment is higher among those aged 18-34 (52%) it is still 30% among those aged 55+. Three in ten (31%) think new variants are not dangerous for them.

ABOUT THE STUDY

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between October 20 and 23, 2023, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,000 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
