Grilled Cheese Beats Out PB&J As Kids' Most Preferred Sandwich

Wonder Bread Parent Survey Finds Kids Are More Likely To Choose White Bread While Parents Would Prefer They Ate Whole Wheat

Toronto, ON - An Ipsos Reid parent survey conducted on behalf of Wonder Bread finds that Grilled Cheese beats Peanut Butter and Jelly As the sandwich kids most prefer to eat. Asked which of four sandwiches - Grilled Cheese, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Tuna, and Bologna-their kids prefer to eat, nearly twice as many parents say "Grilled Cheese" than "Peanut Butter and Jelly" (38% vs. 21%).

Kids' Grilled Cheese sandwiches are probably made with white bread. Of a list of four types of breads - white, whole wheat, multigrain, and Italian -white bread tops the list of breads parents say their kids prefer to eat (43%). In addition, 6% of parents say their kids prefer "Italian" bread. However, when it comes to the nutritional value, parents would prefer that their children eat whole wheat (69%) or multigrain bread (15%).

Why do four in ten kids prefer white bread? The reasons are varied. One in three (35%) parents say it's because of the taste, 10% say it's the texture, and 5% say it's the look. Some parents say it's what they're used to (29%) and/or they just don't like other kinds of bread (8%).

Finally, seven in ten (69%) parents indicate that they would be likely to purchase a white bread with the nutritional value of whole wheat or multigrain bread for their family, with 40% who say they would be "very likely."

These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid/Wonder Bread poll conducted from September 13th-15th and September 20th-22nd, 2005. For the survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 1055 adult Canadian parents of children 0-17 years of age was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within +/-3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian parent population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to the 2001 Census data.
