Majority (56%) feel opposition parties should work with government to avoid an early election, even amidst low support for Trudeau
Only 28% of Canadians believe that the Liberal Party would do better in the next federal election if PM Trudeau resigned as leader.
In response to Jagmeet Singh’s withdrawal of support for Justin Trudeau’s government, over half of Canadians (56%) feel the opposition parties should try to work with the government to avoid an early election, while 44% think the opposition parties should defeat the government to trigger an election.
Only 28% of Canadians believe that the Liberal Party would do better in the next federal election if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned as the Liberal leader.
If a federal election were held tomorrow, the Conservatives would enjoy a decisive victory over all other parties with 45% of the decided vote, an increase of three points since June, assuring them a majority government. Only 28% overall think Trudeau deserves re-election, steady (-1 pt) since January 2024, and only 26% would vote for the Liberals. Singh's NDP (16%, -2 pts) are falling further behind.
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between September 6 and 10, 2024, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,000 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
