Toronto, ON, Jan. 29 2024 - Nearly one in four (22%) Canadians give Canada’s parliamentarians a failing grade when it comes to the progress they’ve made passing new legislation since the last federal election, according to a new Ipsos poll conducted for Global News.  While a slim majority would assign a passing grade, “Cs” (25%) and “Ds” (11%) collectively outweigh “As” (3%) and “Bs” (17%), suggesting ample room for improvement. Moreover, 23% of Canadians don’t know enough about what is happening on parliament hill to provide an assessment on the legislative accomplishments of the House.

TOP LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES

Canadians are clear on what priorities the upcoming session of Parliament should be focused on: reducing the cost of every-day items such as groceries (49%), tackling inflation and interest rates (45%) and improving access to affordable housing (39%).

Canadians are clear on what priorities the upcoming session of Parliament should be focused on: reducing the cost of every-day items such as groceries (49%), tackling inflation and interest rates (45%) and improving access to affordable housing (39%).

It has not been common, historically, to see immigration (22%) among the top-five issues Canadians have for Parliament, but Canadians are linking immigration policy, including international student quotas, to the housing-supply shortage that Canada is experiencing.

Other items near the top of the issue agenda include reducing Canada’s deficit and debt (21%), homelessness (20%) and the cost of energy (15%). All other issues are priorities for 10% of Canadians or less, including a federal dental insurance plan (10%), or universal pharmacare (9%).

ABOUT THE STUDY

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between  January 19th to 22nd, 2024, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,001 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
