I’M PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO…

In light of ongoing trade war with the United States, 44% of Canadians say they are paying close attention to the issue of eliminating inter-provincial trade barriers and just under half (47%) say they are paying close attention to how governments plan to move forward with nation-building projects. Men and Canadians over 55 are most likely to say they are paying close attention to both aspects.

OVER HALF SAY THEY WILL BELIEVE PROGRESS ON NATION-BUILDING WHEN THEY SEE IT.

A majority (62%) agree that eliminating inter-provincial trade barriers in Canada will lead to economic growth, though just over half (55%) say they will believe progress is being made on nation-building projects when they see construction underway. Canadians are more split when it comes to whether or not nation-building projects should be accelerated at risk of reducing length of consultations or overlooking local and Indigenous concerns. While just 32% of Canadians overall say some inter-provincial trade barriers are necessary because provinces have unique needs, agreement is stronger among those in Quebec (42%). However, though only one-third (33%) overall say eliminating inter-provincial trade barriers would positively impact their personal finances, this rises to 40% among Quebeckers.

About the study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between June 17 and 20, 2025, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,000 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
