Working Torontonians Trapped At Their Desks
Toronto, ON - The results of a New Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of Toronto Hydro Telecom finds that working Torontonians appear to be trapped at their desks. Despite almost all (91%) reporting that when they've been able to get away from their desks and have time for themselves they feel invigorated, three in ten (30%) feel that they are chained to their desks at work and are hesitant to leave it unless necessary.
In light of such constraints, most (85%) working Torontonians indicate that they would be `be happier at work' if there was a policy in place that let them better manage their work and personal life through flexible workplace options. Similarly, 87% of working Torontonians say that being able to get away from their desks makes them happier and therefore more productive. In fact, seven in ten (70%) suggest that they would stay longer at their job if their boss gave them more flexibility in their work environment.
These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of Toronto Hydro Telecom from May 20 to May 26, 2007. For the survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 549 working adults living in the Greater Toronto Area was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within 177 4.2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire working adult population in the GTA been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure that the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to Census data.
Torontonians Feel `Guilty' When Not at their Desks...
It appears that `guilt' overcomes the working Torontonians when they leave their desks at work, with one third (33%) saying that they feel guilty leaving the office during the day unless for a business meeting. Similarly, three in ten (30%) feel chained to their desks at work and are hesitant to leave it unless necessary. Similarly, one quarter (26%) even feel guilty leaving on time at the end of the day if others are still at their desks working. With seven in ten (68%) working Torontonians indicating that the only time they are outside during a typical workday is during the commute to and from work, nearly three in ten (27%) claim that they will try to sneak out of the office early to maximize their time outside, now that the summer sunshine is approaching.
