World Vision Holiday Giving Survey

Eight in Ten (84%) Canadians would rather receive a meaningful holiday gift that would help someone else rather than a traditional gift like socks or sweaters One third (32%) of Canadians plan to give a charitable gift in the name of someone on their list this year

Toronto, ON - A new Ipsos Reid survey conducted on behalf of World Vision Canada finds that eight in ten (84%) Canadians would prefer to receive a meaningful gift that would help someone else this holiday season rather than another traditional gift, like socks or a sweater. And while Canadians appreciate receiving holiday gifts from their employer, 75% would prefer a gift be given in their name to help a needy child instead of receiving a gift certificate.

A majority of Canadians say that they would prefer to receive a gift to help someone else rather than a traditional present, and one third (32%) plan on buying a charitable gift in the name of someone on their list this year.

Half (51%) of Canadians feel that after the holiday excitement has passed, they wish they hadn't spent so much money on gifts and instead used some of it to help those less fortunate. Over half of Canadians (56%) feel that the children in their life don't recognize the significance of the holidays, and would like to remind them by giving a gift to a needy child overseas on their behalf. Two thirds (64%) of Canadians feel their children would be happy to receive a gift that would help a child in need.

These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid/World Vision Canada poll conducted from May 30 to June 1, 2006. For the survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 1,001 adult Canadians was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within +/-3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to Census data.
