An Experts’ Consensus on the Impact and Management of Sleep Deprivation

Poor sleep health is a major public health issue affecting a significant proportion of the world’s population. Raising awareness on the importance of adequate sleep is critical.

Sleep plays a crucial role in good health and overall well-being. Unfortunately, sleep problems constitute a global epidemic that threatens the health and quality of life for up to 45% of the world’s population. A multitude of factors, including biological and lifestyle factors, are associated with suboptimal sleep.

Past research highlights that poor sleep health puts individuals at serious risk of long-term health consequences such as neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases. Hence, early intervention of poor sleep health is vital, especially given the inadequate knowledge among the general population.

In January 2023, Ipsos led a virtual regional expert round table discussion with leading sleep experts to understand the impact and management of sleep deprivation. The consensus established during the discussion is summarised in this whitepaper and highlights:

  • Key attributes of sleep health
  • Risk factors leading to poor sleep health
  • High risk groups for poor sleep health
  • Impact of sleep deprivation
  • Current Intervention options for sleep issues

All in all, this experts' consensus aims to discuss the impact of sleep deprivation across regions and populations and the role of sleep supplements in human care.
