Canadians Turn Away From US Amid Tariff Concerns
Rising Economic and Political Tensions Push Canadians to Rethink Ties with the US

Amid President Trump's threats of tariffs and economic pressure, Canadians are reevaluating their view of the United States. A notable 68% now hold a more negative perception of their southern neighbor, driven by Trump's confrontational stance towards Canada. Confidence in Canadian leaders to navigate the complexities of Trump's presidency is mixed, with 47% maintaining trust in their leadership. This sentiment is compounded by widespread concern over economic prospects, as 58% fear adverse effects on their personal finances due to Trump's policies.

Amidst Trump's tariff threats, a significant proportion of Canadians express their intention to avoid traveling to the United States (65%) and to avoid American goods (67%), reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with the administration's policies. This sentiment underscores a notable shift in consumer behavior, driven by economic and political tensions. Furthermore, 60% of Canadians are in favor of implementing a subsidy program to shield workers from the adverse impacts of tariffs. This growing divide between the two nations signals an increasing desire among Canadians for measures that safeguard their economic interests and mitigate potential negative effects of cross-border policy decisions.
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between January 30 and February 3, 2025, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,000 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians aged 18+ been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
