Canadians continue to rank affordability and the cost of living as their top concern, increasing by five percentage points since late March. Following the stock market crash in early April, concern about the economy has risen in priority, now ranking second – surpassing healthcare, housing, and Canada’s relationship with the United States. Despite this shift, amidst President Trump’s trade war, Canada’s relationship with the US continues to rank amongst the top concerns, followed by other economic issues such as taxes and interest rates.

When asked about the most crucial issues facing the country, Canadians continue to rank affordability and the cost of living as their top concern, increasing by five percentage points since late March. This concern continues to be particularly more important to Canadians 55+ (85%), than to younger age groups and to Liberal voters (96%) than other voter groups.

Regarding which party is most capable of addressing these issues, the Liberals and Conservatives are tied, with each party leading on five issues. However, the Conservatives steer the ship regarding affordability and  cost of living concerns, leading by four percentage points, breaking the previous tie between the two parties. While the Liberals are the clear leader in managing Canada’s relationship with the US, the Conservatives are perceived to be most competent in handling immigration.

About the study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between April 8th and 10th, 2025, on behalf of Global News.  For this survey, a sample of n=1,000 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online, via the Ipsos I-Say panel and non-panel sources, and respondents earn a nominal incentive for their participation. Quotas and weighting were employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos polls which include non-probability sampling is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadians been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
