Public Perspectives: Perils of Perception in Canada

June 2016

With the recent results of the UK Brexit Vote still fresh in everyone's mind, we are releasing a special Public Perspectives on the Perils of Perception in Canada.

We asked Canadians to answer twelve questions about their province, ranging from the % of Baby Boomers, to the % who smoke marijuana, to the % who are foreign born. We did this because facts matter, and as some have argued, we feel that had UK residents had more knowledge of the EU, the results of the referendum may have been quite different.

As governments in Canada are increasingly consulting Canadians on key policy decisions, we think knowledge matters, and our Perils of Perception research points to some concerns with how we see the world.

We've also used the questions to calculate an Index of Ignorance, and if you read on, you'll be able to find out which is the most knowledgeable province (and which is not).
