The radio landscape is changing globally, with streaming and podcasts reshaping how we listen—and now, AI is adding a new layer. From AI-generated hosts to curated playlists and automated programming, technology is redefining radio. In Saudi Arabia’s dynamic, tech-savvy market, Ipsos conducted a study to understand how listeners feel about AI’s growing presence in radio.
The results reveal a mix of excitement and caution. Sure, 54% of listeners know about AI-driven radio, and 43% have given it a try—but there’s a catch: a solid 67% say fully AI-produced radio feels a bit cold, missing the warmth that real human hosts bring. In fact, 7 in 10 listeners say real voices make radio feel personal and relatable.
But it’s not all caution; Gen Z listeners are more open to the idea, loving how AI can personalize music and streamline content. AI even earns trust for news, with 2 in 5 Gen Z listeners believing it offers a more unbiased, accurate take. Still, most feel that AI-only stations lack the connection of human hosts, and 7 in 10 say they’re unlikely to engage with fully AI-driven stations.
The Future of Radio: Striking the Right Balance
The takeaway? A hybrid approach might just be the sweet spot. AI can handle content recommendations and automate playlists, while human hosts bring the warmth and engagement that keep audiences tuned in. For broadcasters, it’s not about replacing the human touch with tech—it’s about enhancing the experience.
In this blended model, AI adds efficiency, and humans keep it real. By combining tech and heart, radio can stay fresh and relevant, making it the best of both worlds in a rapidly changing audio landscape.
