When progress fuels restlessness people tend to harken back to a past they feel was more in control. People are rarely seeking a literal return to the past; they are searching for the values and feelings they believe have been lost along the way. Nostalgia can then function as a bridge, not a destination
The Full Ipsos Global Trends Report | Trend: Faced with an uncertain world, many people experience “lostalgia”: a sense of loss of for the future they expected to have. Yet the past people miss never existed: while 62% want their country to be like it was but fewer agree they would want to have grown up when their parents were children (48%). How it has CONSOLIDATED: National longing for “the way it used to be” is almost universal: agreement has risen in both countries that are broadly excited about the future (China), as well as those where the past is more complex (Germany, Brazil, South Africa). |  |
