Online Harassment Against Journalists and Media Professionals is on the Rise
November 9, 2021 — The first-ever Canadian survey of online harassment against journalists and media professionals shows that the issue is pervasive and the attacks are on the rise. The study also highlights the severity of the personal effects and industry-wide consequences. For details, see the documents below.
About the Study
The survey is part of a larger effort to protect media professionals from online violence. CBC/Radio-Canada is working with other media, across Canada and around the world, and to advocate for initiatives to reduce online harm, protect journalists, and get social platforms to enforce their standards.
The survey was conducted by Ipsos between September 27 and October 13, 2021, and was conducted online in English and French. A total of 1,093 journalists and media workers (e.g. managers, videographers, photographers, camera operators, and publishers) participated in the survey. The survey was done in association with:
- Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ)
- Canadian Parliamentary Press Gallery
- CBC/Radio-Canada
- CTV News
- Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec (FPJQ)
- Global News
- Journal de Montréal/Journal de Québec
- Journalists for Human Rights (JHR)
