Optimism Soars in India, Up 7% in January 2026
The January 2026 edition of Ipsos What Worries the World shows a remarkable surge in optimism among Indians. Confidence has risen by 7 per cent, with nearly seven in ten Indians (69%) believing the country is headed in the right direction. This places India in second place globally, tied with Malaysia, behind Singapore, where optimism reaches 82 per cent across citizens in 30 markets.
Globally, however, optimism remains muted. Only four in ten people (41%) feel confident about the future of their countries, despite a modest 3 per cent improvement compared with last month. France records the lowest level of national confidence, with just 9 per cent of citizens believing their country is on the right track.
“India’s position as the world’s fourth-largest economy is built on a foundation of stable governance and long-term vision. Citizens are at the center of policy, with levers such as targeted economic growth, healthcare initiatives, free rations for vulnerable communities, and investments in infrastructure. The focus on sustainable mobility, solar energy, and measures to keep inflation in check reflects a commitment to both progress and quality of life. This combination of stability, inclusivity, and forward-looking strategy not only strengthens confidence today but also lays the groundwork for India’s resilient growth tomorrow,” stated Suresh Ramalingam, CEO, Ipsos India.
Top worries of Indians & global citizens – worry levels have stabilized
The survey also tracks the key issues that concern citizens across countries on a month-on-month basis, highlighting areas where anxieties are rising or easing. Among Indians, concern around education has increased, while worries related to inflation, unemployment, terrorism, and financial and political corruption have largely stabilized, indicating a more measured and balanced outlook.
"Revisions to the US–India trade deal is expected to ease concerns around education by improving access, collaboration, and opportunities. While food inflation has moderated, the cost of living continues to be the top concern for Indians. Globally, ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, along with law and order challenges in several major cities, have made crime and violence the leading worry worldwide. Continued peace efforts in Gaza and Ukraine offer cautious hope of some relief in the months ahead," added Ramalingam.
