Britons back Ukraine joining NATO in latest Ipsos polling
An Ipsos online poll has found that only 1 in 10 Britons say they would oppose Ukraine joining NATO.
The majority of Britons support Ukraine (59%), Finland (61%) and Sweden (62%) joining NATO should they wish to. A majority would also support Ukraine joining the EU (57%).
Four in 10 Britons think that the Prime Minister’s suggestion of 200,000 Ukrainian refugees being eligible to come to UK is at ‘about right’, with a further 1 in 5 (21%) believing it’s too few. However, 22% say that is too many.
More broadly, when it comes to how Ukrainian refugees get here Britons are firmly in favour of making it easier for them to come to Britain, with just 1 in 10 opposing that, while 60% say we should remove all restrictions.
There is also widespread support for the actions of FIFA and UEFA taken against Russia, with 78% of Britons saying it was the right thing to do to suspend Russian football clubs and national teams from all competitions.
Kelly Beaver, Chief Executive of Ipsos in the UK and Ireland said:
These findings highlight the strength of feeling that the British people have about the terrible situation in Ukraine. Britons want to provide support to the Ukrainian people – including Government steps to make it easier for refugees - and nation, by backing their entry to NATO and the EU. Meanwhile we also see public endorsement of sporting sanctions to add to their support for economic ones.
