The SNP meets for its spring party conference this weekend, just a few weeks before embarking on its campaign to win an unprecedented second term in government. Ipsos has produced a briefing pack which charts the party’s polling performance and highlights the key issues that will dominate this year’s Holyrood election campaign. Our latest poll shows the party in a close race with Labour to win the election, holding a narrow 1% lead in the constituency seats and 3% lead in the list seats, indicating that it's all to play for. Our results suggest the SNP being the largest single party by a small margin, based on a uniform swing across seats. Alex Salmond remains a key asset for the party, being better known and more popular than the other three main party leaders. It is clear that the key battleground for votes will be around the economy and the key public services, since these are clear priorities for the electorate. The state of the economy remains the most important issue of concern for Scots but we expect the public to become increasingly interested in the key public services as the election draws closer. The conference will help set the scene for how party attempts to gain a second term in office.
