Ipsos interviewed refugees and asylum seekers in advance of `Refugee Week' (14th - 20th June 2010). The survey was commissioned by Refugee Action on behalf of the Refugee Week partnership.
A survey conducted by Ipsos from 11-13 April 2008 found that a quarter (25%) of British adults felt that local areas were losing their sense of Britishness because of immigration; a 13 percentage point increase from 2005. Results are based on a nationally representative sample of 1,000 GB adults aged 18+ years.
Ipsos's recent poll for the Sun, conducted by telephone on 31 October and 1 November, shows a mixed picture of attitudes towards immigration in Britain. More people now agree that immigration is good for Britain (from 43% last year to 48% now), and fewer people disagree with this statement (45% last year and 36% now). Almost half (45%) think that immigrants work harder than people who are born here.
The public are much more likely to think that cultural and religious barriers prevent Bangladeshi and Pakistani women from working than women in general (37% compared with 5%).
The Commission on Integration and Cohesion has launched its report. The report highlights a number of ways in which to foster a better sense of cohesion and integration in local communities. Research carried out on behalf of the Commission by Ipsos shows:
Despite ongoing issues relating to the 2005 London bombings, the threat of terrorism and the impact of new immigrants to the country, people's own experiences of prejudice and discrimination appear relatively unchanged from previous years. Perceptions of integration and attitudes to race relations also remain the same with ethnic minorities continuing the trend of being more positive than white people on most measures.
An Ipsos poll for the Evening Standard shows that the majority of Londoners (59%) believe that Muslim women concealing their faces is bad for race relations and just over a quarter (27%) disagree. The research, conducted on Ipsos's new monthly London Omnibus survey, also shows that the Capital is split on whether the comments made by Jack Straw have worsened (44%) race relations in London or made no difference (43%).
An exclusive poll by Ipsos for ITV's Tonight Show shows that the British public believe Muslim women have a right to wear a veil - but not in the classroom, on television or on the beat.
