2 out of 3 Americans Agree Oprah Winfrey Should Invite Letterman to Appear on Her Show

67% of all Americans, 76% of all Letterman viewers and 89% of the most frequent Letterman viewers agree

Between January 25 and January 27, 2002, Ipsos Reid U.S. Public Affairs interviewed a representative sample of 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide by telephone. The margin of error is +/- 3.1%.

(January 29, 2002 - Washington, DC) By more than a 4-1 margin, Americans agree Oprah Winfrey should invite David Letterman to appear on the "Oprah Winfrey Show." 67% say she should invite Letterman on and only 14% say she should not, while 18% have no opinion or have never heard of the "Oprah Winfrey Show."

Feelings run most strongly among viewers of "The Late Show with David Letterman." Among all Letterman viewers, 76% say Oprah should invite Letterman on and 12% disagree. Among the most frequent Letterman viewers, 89% urge Oprah to invite Letterman to appear and only 9% disagree.

Young adults age 18-34 feel particularly strongly about this, agreeing by a 75% - 15% margin that Oprah should invite Letterman to appear.

The survey found that 98% of Americans have heard of "The Late Show with David Letterman."

The survey was conducted by Ipsos-Reid U.S. Public Affairs, the Washington, D.C.-based division of Ipsos-Reid, which is part of the world's fourth largest polling and market research organization, the Ipsos group, based in Paris. Ipsos-Reid U.S. Public Affairs is a non-partisan, objective public affairs research organization made up of Democratic and Republican campaign and political polling veterans. It was established in Washington in August 2001, and it is led by Thomas Riehle, who has more than 15 years of experience as a political pollster in Washington.
