Ipsos/ Reuters Poll: January 2012
- According to the January 2012 Reuters-Ipsos poll, 30% of Republican voters would vote for Mr. Romney, up from only 18% in December.
- This puts him 10 percentage points ahead of his nearest competitor (Newt Gingrich at 20%). This is also Mr. Romney's strongest showing among Republicans since we began charting the Republican primary race in June 2011.
- Rick Santorum has received a bounce from his close second place finish in Iowa. He now receives support from 13% of Republican voters, up from only 4% in December.
- Ron Paul also continues to attract significant levels of support with 16% of the Republican electorate, up from 12%,
Mitt Romney is also the strongest performer in hypothetical matchups against President Obama among registered voters.
- When asked to select between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, Obama wins by 5 percentage points, 48 to 43.
- Ron Paul is also a surprisingly strong performer against President Obama, only falling by 7 percentage points 48 to 41.
- Santorum loses by 11 percentage points, 51 to 40.
- Gingrich loses by 15 percentage points, 53 to 38.
These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Reuters from January 5th - 9th, 2012. For the survey, a nationally representative, randomly selected sample of exactly 1,046 adults aged 18 and older across the United States was interviewed by Ipsos via live telephone interviewing on landlines and cell phones. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate within 3 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult population in the U.S. been polled.
