COVID-19 Pandemic negatively affected many children’s mood and education, according to parents

Child Mind Institute survey explores traumatic events, treatment, impacts of the COVID pandemic, and the strategies families use to cope with these pressures

New York, NY, October 10, 2022 – A new Child Mind Institute survey sponsored by Blue Shield of California with data collection by Ipsos among 3,200 parents of children ages 24 and younger finds that nearly three times as many parents say their child struggled in school during 2020-2021 than before the pandemic (31% vs. 11%). Four in 10 parents say that their child’s mood became worse during the pandemic, with increased anxiety and increased stress as the most common issues reported.

The poll also finds that 31% of parents say their child has experienced a traumatic event. However, fewer than half (45%) say that their pediatrician, family doctor, or mental health clinician has ever asked if their child has had stressful or traumatic experiences.

About the Study

These are some the findings of Child Mind Institute survey sponsored by Blue Shield of California with data collection by Ipsos conducted between July 21st and August 31st, 2022. For this survey, a sample of 3,200 parents of children ages 24 and younger were interviewed online in English. The total sample of 3,200 parents is comprised of 800 Parents of Children Aged 0-6, 800 Parents of Children Aged 7-12, 800 Parents of Children Aged 13-18, and 800 Parents of Children Aged 19-24.

The sample was randomly drawn from a partner online panel source, M360 Research. Respondents that work for the government and are barred from participating in marketing research were excluded from the study. Respondent characteristics were calibrated to be representative of the U.S. Population. The source of these population targets is U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey. The sample drawn for this study reflects fixed sample targets on demographics. Post-hoc weights were made to the population characteristics on gender, age, race/ethnicity, region, and education. Individual weights were created for Parents of Children Aged 0-6, Parents of Children Aged 7-12, Parents of Children Aged 13-18, and Parents of Children Aged 19-24, respectively. Another weight for all 3,200 parents was created to make this audience proportional to the population.

Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online non-probability polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points for all respondents. Ipsos calculates a design effect (DEFF) for each study based on the variation of the weights, following the formula of Kish (1965). This study had a credibility interval adjusted for design effect of the following (n=3,200, DEFF=1.5, adjusted Confidence Interval=+/-3.6 percentage points).

The poll also has a credibility interval of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points for Parents of Children Aged 0-6, plus or minus 4.2 percentage points for Parents of Children Aged 7-12, plus or minus 4.2 percentage points for Parents of Children Aged 13-18, and plus or minus 4.2 percentage points for Parents of Children Aged 19-24.
