Reuters/Ipsos Core Political Survey: Impeachment Tracker (12/11/2019)

Despite the House of Representatives moving forward with the process of impeachment, Americans remain divided on the issue and President Trump’s job approval rating remains unaffected.

Washington, DC, December 11, 2019   As the House Judiciary Committee prepares to debate the articles of impeachment against President Trump, perceptions regarding whether President Trump should be impeached or not remain split with 45% of Americans supporting impeachment and 41% opposing it. Partisanship is a strong driver in determining whether or not one believes the president should be impeached. Eighty-percent of Democratic registered voters (80%) believe the president should be impeached, 8% do not and 12% are unsure. Republican registered voters' perceptions are inverted - 83% report President Trump should not be impeached, 13% say he should be, and 5% are unsure.

President Trump's job approval rating also remains unchanged from last week. Approximately two in five Americans (40%) approve of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president, while 54% disapprove. Similar to opinions concerning impeachment, President Trump's job approval rating falls on party lines, with 80% of Republican registered voters approving of the job he is doing, while just 10% of Democratic registered voters approve.

Just one-third of Americans (32%) say they feel things in the country are headed in the right direction, while 55% say they think things are off on the wrong track, and 13% are unsure. Republican registered voters are twice as likely as the general population to say the country is headed in the right direction (65%). On the other hand, Democratic registered voters are much more likely to say the country is headed in the wrong direction (83%).

There is no single issue that a majority of Americans point to as the biggest problem that faces the country. The economy and jobs (18%), healthcare (17%), and immigration (15%) continue to top the list of important problems for Americans. Like other issues that the Reuters/Ipsos Core Political examines, there are distinct differences in how Republican and Democratic registered voters perceive major problems in the country. Healthcare (24%) is the top concern for Democratic registered voters, followed by the economy and jobs (18%) and the environment (13%). Republican registered voters report that immigration (28%) is their biggest concern, followed by the economy and jobs (16%), and terrorism (11%).

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between December 9-10, 2019 on behalf of Thomson Reuters. For this survey, a sample of 1,116 adults age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 428 Democratic registered voters, 392 Republican registered voters, and 94 independent registered voters. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.3 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval ± 5.4 percentage points for Democratic registered voters, ± 5.6 percentage points for Republican registered voters, ± 11.5 percentage points for independent registered voters.
