About 81% of Americans report they are somewhat or very familiar with the coronavirus. In early March, when the poll was conducted, about half of Americans reported they have not altered their daily routine (49%), but 42% did say they are washing their hands or using disinfectant more frequently, and about 1 in 5 have said they are avoiding physical contact with others, like handshakes (18%). About 1 in 10 Americans report that their work or business has been impacted by the spread of the virus (9%). One-third report that they have had problems with supply chains (30%), 26% report that their sales have decreased, and 23% say they have had conferences or meetings cancelled or postponed. About 6% have had staff shortages due to the illness.

When it comes to the government’s response, 38% approve of how Donald Trump has handled policies around the coronavirus. Republicans and Democrats have different perceptions on Trump’s performance – just 14% of Democrats approve compared to 76% of Republicans. Democrats are also more likely to say the virus is an imminent threat (38%) compared to just 20% of Republicans.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between March 2-3, 2020 on behalf of Thomson Reuters. For this survey, a sample of 1,115 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 527 Democrats, 396 Republicans and 102 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.3 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval ± 4.9 percentage points for Democrats, ± 5.6 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 11.1 percentage points for independents.
