Washington, DC – Following the summit in Helsinki, Finland, Reuters/Ipsos conducted a poll to understand the impact of the meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Reuters/Ipsos found that a majority of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of Russia (53%). However, President Trump’s overall approval rating remains unimpacted with 39% of all Americans approving of Donald Trump’s job performance as president.
Despite President Trump’s comments made in Helsinki, a majority of Americans (51%) also believe it is likely that authorities will find evidence of an illegal relationship between the Trump administration and Russia. A similar number of Americans (56%) report believing that Russia attempted to influence the 2016 presidential election with the goal of helping then-candidate Donald Trump win the election. This belief is held most strongly among Democrats (81%), but interestingly, a third of Republicans (32%) also agree that Russia worked to influence the election to help Donald Trump win the presidency.
Americans are split on their perceptions of Russia’s relationship with the United States, with 36% viewing Russia as an enemy and 37% as a competitor. Fewer than one in ten (8%) perceive Russia to be a friend of the United States. Republicans are more likely to view Russia as a competitor (44%) than Democrats (31%), while Democrats are more likely to say Russia is an enemy (50%) than Republicans (27%).
About this Study
These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters July 16 - 17, 2018. For the survey, a sample of 1,520 Americans, including 576 Democrats, 611 Republicans, and 192 Independents ages 18+ were interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points for all adults, 4.7 percentage points for Democrats, 4.5 percentage points for Republicans, and 8.1 percentage points for Independents. The data were weighted to the U.S. current population data by gender, age, education, and ethnicity. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error.
