Reuters/Ipsos Data: Democratic Presidential Candidates (03/27/2019)
Washington, D.C. - Reuters/Ipsos are continuing our analysis of the perceptions of the Democratic candidates running who have announced they are running for president in 2020. As some people formally decided not to run, like Eric Holder, Sherrod Brown, and Michael Bloomberg, we have removed them from our poll. In their place, we have added the latest slew of new candidates, including author and spiritual leader Marianne Williamson, entrepreneur Andrew Yang, former Representative John Delaney, current Representatives Eric Swalwell and Seth Moulton, and Senator Michael Bennet. Overall, the candidates’ familiarity and favorability ratings remain stable since February.
Senator Bernie Sanders (79%) and former Vice President Joe Biden (78%) are the most well-known of the candidates. Americans also view Sanders (54%) and Biden (62%) the most favorably out of all of the candidates in the field. Senator Elizabeth Warren rounds out the top three candidates who are most well-known, with 55% reporting they are very or somewhat familiar with her. Forty-four percent of Americans view Warren favorably. Americans report they are not as familiar with many of the newcomers to the race, like Marianne Williamson and Seth Moulton (11% are familiar with either). Williamson (48%) and Moulton (43%) are moderately well-liked by those who are aware of them. Mayor Pete Buttigieg is the least well-known candidate, with just 10% of Americans reporting they are somewhat or very familiar with him, and 44% view him favorably.
The trend for Democrats and Democratic-leaning Independents mirrors the general population. Sanders and Biden are the most well-known of the candidates, with 88% and 86% reporting they are familiar with the respective candidates. Sanders (86%) and Biden (85%) also enjoy the strongest favorability ratings among Democrats. Sixty-seven percent of Democrats report being familiar with Warren, and three-quarters (74%) view her positively. Democrats are not any more familiar with the newcomers, like Williamson (11%) and Moulton (12%), than the general public. Among the Democrats who know them, Williamson is liked by more than half (57%), and Moulton is viewed favorably by 47%. Buttigieg is known by just 14% of Democrats but has strong favorability numbers (61%).

The data were weighted to the U.S. current population data by gender, age, education, and ethnicity. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Figures marked by an asterisk (*) indicate a percentage value of greater than zero but less than one half of one per cent. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding.
