Reuters/Ipsos Core Political Survey: Presidential Approval Tracker (03/11/2021)
Washington, DC, March 11, 2021 — This week’s Reuters/Ipsos Core Political survey finds that the majority of Americans continue to approve of President Joe Biden’s performance. Regarding the most important issues facing the country, three of the top 4 issues remain the same but immigration has emerged as a more pressing concern for some Americans, particularly Republicans.
Nearly 1 in 4 Americans say the economy, unemployment, and jobs is the most concerning issue for Americans today. This is followed by public health, disease, and illness (15%), immigration, and the healthcare system (10% for both).
Public health is most concerning to Democrats with nearly 1 in 5 saying it is the most important issue. This is closely followed by 18% who say the economy and 14% who say the healthcare system. Meanwhile, over 1 in 4 Republicans believe that the economy is most important, followed by 22% who believe immigration is. This is significantly higher than last week when only 12% of Republicans thought it was important. For independents the economy is also most important (30%), followed by public health (19%).
Over half (54%) of Americans continue to approve of the way Joe Biden is handling his job as President. His approval rating remains higher than what was seen for former President Donald Trump at the same stage of his presidency (45%).
Democratic support for Biden remains strong, with 91% approving of his performance as President. This is followed by 48% of independents, and only 20% of Republicans.
About the Study
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between March 10-11, 2021 on behalf of Thomson Reuters. For this survey, a sample of 1,001 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 476 Democrats, 340 Republicans and 105 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval ± 5.1 percentage points for Democrats, ± 6.1 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 10.9 percentage points for independents.
