Curation is about doing more with the data you hold in your hands already. It’s about taking a fresh helicopter perspective, connecting knowledge and transforming existing data into consumer-centric insights.

Rozemarijn LandeweerdFresh insights or answers to business questions & issues without doing more research? In this blog I’d like to dive into how this is possible with curation. More and more brands are already convinced of this new way of looking at data, making more of what they know already.

In this day and age, I believe we are struggling with infobesity. There is an incredible amount of data out there. So much that it is overwhelming us, we can’t see the forest for the trees and it’s difficult to take quick action. Often, after it’s served a single purpose, data still disappears in the metaphorical desk drawer, never to be used again. That’s where curation comes in!

Curation defined

CurationCuration is about doing more with the data you hold in your hands already. It’s about taking a fresh helicopter perspective, connecting knowledge and transforming existing data into consumer-centric insights. Insights that have real business impact and easily travel within an organization to reach more people.

I have just returned from a curation summit in Paris where best practices in curation world wide were shared. It’s really exciting to see all the different experiences, curation is unique every time. That also goes for the deliverables. There are playbooks, video’s and one-page infographics…the possibilities are really endless.

So why do companies need curation?

Because it’s a pity not to use all that data that you have right there in your hands!. Often, it’s not needed to spend more money on setting up a whole new study. Combining and analyzing data in new ways provides answers that single research cannot. Curation is also a valuable starting point, with first insights saving time and money on deep digging later on.

So how does curation work?

An experienced Ipsos curation expert works out a customized approach, depending on the need or interest of the client. The curator digs through the available data, combines it with industry knowledge and looks at it in a brand new daylight. Often this is supplemented with stakeholder or expert interviews for a complete picture. Next, the new insights are brought to life in a highly visual way that inspires and is easily remembered.
