Attitudes to disability
Findings from this survey of adults in Great Britain, conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Mencap, suggest that the public believes that some people with disabilities face a more hostile climate as a result of the government’s focus on cutting public spending.
The survey finds that about three in five members (61 per cent) of the British public believe that cuts to services and public spending may make some people angry at those who receive disability benefits.
Furthermore, nearly half (49 per cent) also thinks that the cuts may make people who receive disability benefits more open to abuse or attack.
Technical note
Ipsos interviewed a representative sample of 1,029 adults aged 15+ across Great Britain. Interviews were conducted face-to-face over the period 11-17 March, 2011. Data are weighted to match the profile of the population.
