British public attitudes to Afghanistan
With the ending of Britain's military campaign in Afghanistan, Ipsos and King's College London have carried out research into the British public's views of the war.
Key findings:
Half of Britons sampled were informed of the cost of the Afghanistan War to Britain, at £27 billion and 435 British lives, while half were not.
- Six in ten (58%) of those reminded of the cost thought the campaign was ineffective in bringing security and stability to Afghanistan, compared with 49% of those not reminded. Just over one in three of those reminded (36%) thought it was effective, compared with 42% of those not reminded.
- Over half of those reminded of the cost (55%) thought the Afghanistan war was ineffective in preventing Afghanistan being used as a base for terrorists to attack British interests, compared with 49% of those not reminded. Four in ten each of those reminded (39%) and not reminded (41%) thought it had been effective at doing so
- Around a third felt the campaign was worthwhile, while four in ten felt it was not worthwhile. A fifth said Britain should never get involved in military campaigns in other countries. There was little difference whether people were reminded of the cost or not.
