The winners of the British Quality of Management Awards" were announced at 12.00 on Friday 27 March at an awards ceremony at Trinity House, Tower Hill, London EC3.

The awards, sponsored by MORI and PA Consulting's Sundridge Park Management Centre are based on the views of the City, business and financial journalists and captains of industry; what they perceive to be the key criteria for successful management and what they think keeps leaders ahead of their competitors.

The objective of the awards is to highlight among corporate leaders and institutions the potential for sustainable growth in shareholder value through enhanced quality of management.

1997 marks the fifth and final year of the awards. Marks & Spencer won the 1996 Quality of Management" award as well as first prize for Quality of Governance". Second prize went to British Airways and Glaxo Wellcome came in third place.

The portfolio of the top performing companies was found to significantly outperform on traditional financial measures. This year, we have undertaken additional analysis of the top 17 companies who received multi-nominations for the awards over the five year period. This has established a close link between quality of management and shareholder value on a range of key drivers and measures, especially customer and employee satisfaction.
