More than two-thirds of those interviewed by MORI actively backed the plan to give local children the best possible start in life, while just 1% were expressly opposed.

Slough Borough Council commissioned the research to test support for a new Early Years Centre in Chalvey, and on its proposals to develop the centre within the Chalvey Nursery School site.

The Early Years Centre - one of the first of a planned network in the borough - will be run by a partnership of education, health and social services, and other groups with an interest in child care.

MORI interviewed 202 parents and other adults of child-rearing age who live in Chalvey. 68% supported the idea of a new Early Years Centre in Chalvey, while only 1% opposed it.

When it was suggested that the centre be developed in empty rooms at the Chalvey Schools site, support was almost as strong, with 60% in support and only 6% in opposition.

When interviewees were asked what they would like to see in the centre, health clinics and facilities for parents and toddlers to use together were among he services most often mentioned.

Technical details

MORI interviewed 202 adults in the Chalvey ward of Slough who were either parents of children aged 10 or under, or were aged 18-35. All interviewing was conducted by telephone between 10-12 August 1998.
