The Ipsos poll, commissioned by the History Matters -- Pass It On shows 73% of UK residents are interested in history while 59% are interested in sport in general, and around half (48%) express an interest in football.

Other findings included:

  • 80% think history matters in today's society with 16% disagreeing;
  • 73% think too many old buildings are being demolished and 13% do not;
  • Nearly two thirds of people (62%) think the government is not doing enough to protect the nation's history, with 16% disagreeing.
  • 69% think history is a 'cool' subject with 20% saying it is 'uncool.'

Compared to nearly three-quarters (73%) who have an interest in history, celebrities interest a quarter (25%) of UK residents.

History Matters omnibus survey: IPSOS interviewed a representative sample of 1,030 UK residents aged 16+ between 16 and 18 June 2006. All interviews were conducted by telephone, and data were weighted using 2001 census data.
