- In 1999, the following question was asked: 'As you may have heard or read, there has been a lot of media coverage recently about doctors making errors or taking advantage of their position. Thinking now about those stories and taking your answer from this showcard, how well or badly would you say that most doctors do their job nowadays?'
- In 2000, the question began as follows: 'As you may have heard or read, doctors have been reported in the press or on TV recently in an unfavourable light e.g. the Bristol surgeon enquiry and stories about doctors helping people die'.
- In 2001, 1,918 adults were asked a similar question but with slightly different wording, which read: 'As you may have heard or read, doctors have been reported in the press or on TV recently in an unfavourable light e.g. the Bristol surgeon enquiry and stories about Alder Hey and other hospitals retaining body parts'.
- In 2002, the sample was split and two different versions of the question were asked: 947 adults were asked Version 1 and read, 'As you may have heard or read, doctors have been reported in the press or on TV recently in an unfavourable light e.g. the Bristol surgeon enquiry and stories about Alder Hey and other hospitals retaining body parts'; and 1,025 were asked Version 2, 'As you may have heard or read, doctors are sometimes reported in the press or on TV in an unfavourable light'.
- This year, 2003, there was no split sample and only one version of this question was asked which was equivalent to Version 2 from 2002.
