TV presenter Jill Dando beat Denise Van Outen into second place as the celebrity that men would like to have cosy dinner with, according to the results of a MORI poll for the makers of Knorr Cubes announced today. Women's No.1 was Sean Connery followed by Mel Gibson, while another 'beefy' favourite topped our list of most desirable foods.

Jill scooped 16% of the men's votes (20% in Scotland and the South West) compared to 11% for Denise and a joint 9% for Sophia Loren, Jennifer Aniston and Sharon Stone. Denise was tops among men in the North (19%) and Gwyneth Paltrow in London (14%), the only two exceptions to Jill Dando's No.1 spot.

One in five women (19%) would choose to 'bond' with Sean over dinner (26% Wales and West Midlands, 24% Scotland). This compares to 16% who want to use their fork as a 'lethal weapon' with Mel (22% Yorkshire & Humberside) or 10% who would turn their dining room into an emergency room with gorgeous George Clooney (14% London).

Staying with 'beefcake', the survey also asked people to name their five favourite food ingredients, (not including sweets and snacks). Chicken (43%) and beef (42%) were virtually equal first as the UK's favourite ingredients by far, followed by pasta (27%), potato (25%) and cheese (21%).

The Makers of Knorr cubes commissioned the survey as a 'Ready Steady Cook' challenge to themselves to devise great new recipe ideas, based on the nation's favourite foods. Taking the list of top national ingredients, home Economist Jenny Shaw, has created a Chicken and Potato Layer. The results were also used to develop a new range of regional dishes including: Smoked Haddock Pasta Bake for Scots and Chicken and Herb Pasta Salad for Londoners.

The Knorr range consists of Stock Cubes (Chicken, Vegetable, Beef, Fish and other meat varieties); Seasoning Cubes (Stir Fry Oriental Spices, Saffron Rice, Pilau Rice, Perfect Pasta); Herb Cubes (Mixed Herb, Basil, Parsley & Garlic).

Knorr is registered trade-unionsmark of Knorr-Nahrmittel A.G.
