MORI Political Monitor, February 2005
February's Political Monitor, conducted for the Financial Times, shows the highest level of voting intentions for the Conservative Party recorded by MORI for 18 months.
February's Political Monitor, conducted for the Financial Times, shows the highest level of voting intentions for the Conservative Party recorded by MORI for 18 months. Currently, 37% of those absolutelt certain to vote in a General Election say they would vote Conservative (up five points from January). Yet the Conservatives' gain has not come from Labour, as 39% say they would vote Labour (up one point), but instead from a fall in share for the Liberal Democrats -- down four points to 18%.
Labour's and the Conservatives' high profile pledges on immigration and asylum over the past couple of weeks may partly explain the surge in concern about race/immigration/asylum detected in this poll. Two in five people (40%) now say that race/immigration/asylum is one of the most important issues facing Britain. More people mention this than any other issues, and concern has risen by 14 percentage points since January.
