MORI Research Backs RFU's Vision For The Game

A survey of 425 grass roots rugby clubs, exploring support for RFU's Eight Year Strategic Plan and long-term vision.

A MORI survey of 425 grass roots rugby clubs, approximately 1/5 of the RFU's entire membership, has highlighted widespread support for its Eight Year Strategic Plan, revealing a desire within the game to unite around the RFU's long-term vision.

The MORI research, conducted between 9th - 19th April, revealed that 61% of clubs contacted were aware of the RFU's Eight Year Strategic Plan, and that 65% of these supported it - with only 4% totally opposed. Moreover, 57% of clubs contacted by MORI who had signed the SGM resolutions, and were aware of the Strategic Plan, expressed their support for the Strategic Plan. This demonstrates the success of the recent regional roadshows by members of the senior RFU management team and Council.

Significantly, around half of the clubs who expressed a view on the SGM resolutions felt that passing the resolutions would lead to more division, disarray and breakaway threats. In addition, ahead of Friday's Special General Meeting, less than one in seven believed that the grass roots game would benefit if the resolutions were passed.

Interestingly, 68% of those club secretaries who were aware of the SGM resolutions and amendments did not actively support them. This is complemented by last weekend's Sunday Times survey which showed that 70% of 1st XV captains contacted, opposed their clubs' apparent support of the Reform Group. Furthermore, only 2/5 of MORI contacted clubs who are signatories to the resolutions actually want to see a majority in favour of the resolutions at the SGM.

Respected figures such as Bill Beaumont have publicly stated their opposition to the Special General Meeting.

Bill Beaumont said, "I am delighted to hear the positive results that have come out of the MORI poll survey. We now need every club to get behind the RFU Strategic Plan. I am pleased with the feedback I have received from the recent roadshows and the commitment of the RFU to host them every year. I urge everyone to support the RFU on Friday at the SGM and oppose the resolutions."

MORI conducted 425 interviews by telephone at random with club officials and other senior officials. Respondents were selected at random from all non-Premiership RFU- affiliated clubs.
