Perceptions Of Cleanliness At Heartlands Hospital
MORI has recently undertaken a cleanliness audit of Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, interviewing 1,221 patients, visitors, relatives and carers at the Hospital, over a five day period. People were asked how clean or dirty they felt the hospital was overall on that particular day.

The overall results on cleanliness are positive -- 84% say the hospital is clean overall (25% say very clean and 59% fairly clean). Only seven per cent say that the hospital is dirty.
In addition, around a third (32%) say the standard of cleanliness has improved over the past 12 months, with six per cent saying it has been getting worse. A further three in ten have not noticed much change in cleanliness (30%).
Technical details
- Unless otherwise stated, results are based on 1221 respondents who took part in a face to face interview. Respondents are patients (in-patients (165) or out-patients (399)), visitors (506), relatives (108) or carers (39). Staff were not interviewed as part of this survey.
- Fieldwork took place between 7-11 July 2005 on site at Heartlands Hospital and interviewers worked at various locations around the hospital, as well as going onto wards.
- Where results do not sum to 100, this may be due to multiple responses, computer rounding or the exclusion of don't knows/not stated.
- An asterisk (*) represents a value of less than one half or one percent, but not zero
- Results are not weighted.
