School-age Sight Testing Research
Research to inform policy decisions and guidance on Primary 7 school vision screening programmes by determining the number of previously undetected significant sight problems identified as a result of the screening
In collaboration with Dr John Ravenscroft and Dr Jennifer Skillen (experts in children's visual problems), we were commissioned by the Scottish Government to determine whether the routine sight testing of children in Primary 7 (age 10-11) identifies previously undetected significant sight problems. The research was based on the screening programmes in NHS Fife and NHS Lanarkshire.

There were four main stages to the research: a short literature review; analysis of ISD data; telephone interviews with parents of children who had failed the screening; and analysis of optometrist data.
