The first national surveys of housing association (HA) shared owners and retirement leaseholders were conducted by MORI on behalf of the Housing Corporation.

The surveys were designed to provide detailed socio-demographic data on HA shared owners and retirement leaseholders across England; this covers household profile, employment and social class, and personal finances. In addition, the surveys looked at a range of issues relating to shared owner and retirement leaseholder attitudes towards their housing and HA, the scheme and housing finance.

Technical details

The surveys were conducted in 24 local authority (LA) areas, which were randomly selected within the Housing Corporation's four regions -- six each in London, South, Central and North -- based on all HAs with shared owner and/or retirement leaseholder stock. The 24 LAs contained 82 HAs, including only those with at least 20 relevant units, of which 75 were eligible and participated in the survey. These HAs provided the address databases from which the sample addresses were randomly selected.

In total, 1,025 interviews were completed -- 812 with shared owners, and 213 with retirement leaseholders. Fieldwork was conducted face-to-face in respondents' homes between October 2003 and January 2004. Weighting was applied to the data based on the overall shared owner and retirement leaseholder stock profile within the Corporation's four regions.

Topline findings include both shared owner and retirement leaseholder results and these as well as the reports for each survey can be downloaded via the links to the right of the page.
